I have been very encouraged by the number of practitioners, therapists, hygienists and nurses who have come up to me on various academic and social occasions and said how useful they have found the scale.

They tell me that just having the scale up on the wall of the surgery or waiting room reminds everyone of the importance of recognising clinical dryness and at last there is something which gives them useful clinical guidance, especially about when they can treat or give advice, and when they should refer. From my perspective, I am delighted that the scale is proving to be as useful as we had hoped. It was designed not as a distant academic tool, but something that everyone who is concerned with oral health could use.
